Oemleria cerasiformis/Indian Plum-Osoberry
Oemleria cerasiformis
This deciduous shrub exhibits an upright growth habit and can propagate through suckers. Its foliage consists of green, lance-shaped leaves that are fuzzy and gray-green on the underside. When crushed, the leaves emit a scent reminiscent of watermelon rind. The shrub’s name is derived from its small, plum-like fruit, which ripen in the fall and provide winter sustenance for birds, rodents, deer, foxes, and coyotes, all of which enjoy the bittersweet fruits.
