Red Alder

This large, deciduous tree is native to the western coast of North America, from Alaska to California. Known for its rapid growth and ecological benefits, it typically reaches heights of 65-98 feet, making it one of the largest alders. It has a broadly conical habit and is easily recognized by its thin, gray bark, often adorned with patches of white lichens, and its wavy, toothed leaves with slightly rolled-under edges. Catkins form before the leaves emerge in spring, adding to its distinctive appearance. The leaves remain green until dropping in the fall, contributing to its lush appearance throughout the growing season. Preferring moist, well-drained soils, it thrives in cool, moist slopes and along watercourses.
